This is a hot topic. Some may say, “God only likes a certain type of music”, but it is not that simple. This is one of the, “non-essential doctrine” issues. It is, however, a very important one.
Liberals and liberal Christian (yes you can) are consumed with modern music.
There are several ways we can approach this issue:
1. We can look at which type of music that quasi-Christian churches use.
- Such as the Emergent Church movement (spiritual formation churches),
- and TV pseudo-Christian shows (Benny Hinn and other false prophets)
2. We can examine the music of the neo-evangelistic movement churches:
- Charismatic Pentecostal Churches
- Moderate and liberal Baptist Churches
- IFCA type of churches (Independent Fundamental Churches of America) and other non-denominational churches
3. We can inspect the lifestyle of the Christian Rock musicians. That lifestyle differs not a little from the drug infested, sexually saturated, rebellious, long haired, immodestly dressed worldly music cast of characters. Well, maybe their lifestyle differs in some cases but not very much. I site Sandy Patti, Amy Grant as good examples of bad examples for Christian Rock Music
Instead let us look at some Scriptural principles:
- Music is important to man and to GOD - The word sing, singing, song, sang, are mentioned 216 times.
- Satan is smart and able to deceive folks about music - 1 Peter 5:8 - Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
- Our music should not appear worldly even if it is technology correct. - 1Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
- We must examine lifestyle and practice of musicians. Mt 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
There are many passages in Scripture that teach about music. Satan’s music should differ from GOD’S music. Certain types of music (not just the words) dishonor GOD. Even though some people make fun of old fashioned attitudes about music, there IS music imported from African paganism. There IS a beat that encourages sexual thought. There IS a rhythm that feeds rebellion. There IS a syncopated rhythm that brings a change to doctrine (eventually).
We have the freedom of taste in music BUT we had better be careful and we had better stay away from the edge. Having the liberty to do something does not give us the license to do it. It is best to be a little too careful than start down the slippery slope to disaster.
There is liberal music and conservative music. GOD is a conservative.
HTOITA - hopefully
