DEFINITION OF "WILLING IGNORANCE"

This picture is pertinent to this blog

The final word I am going to help people with today is Ignorance. I am going to have to add an adjective to it though. For the publicly schooled among us and adjective is a word that defines a noun [look that one up].

An example would be, I have a wife. This is a true statement. Wife is a noun. If is said I have a pretty wife (which is also a true statement), I would have added a word telling you something about my wife. See above picture.

The word I am adding to “ignorance” is “willing”. I am adding this because we are all ignorant of many things. I am totally ignorant of how to do algebra. My friend Jeff is not ignorant of algebra but he is ignorant of “supralapsarian theology.” Ignorance is not wrong unless it is willing ignorance. I am willingly ignorant of algebra but Jeff is simply ignorant about supralapsarian theology.

Two dictionary definitions: ignorance
1. the lack of knowledge or education -
2. having no knowledge or awareness of something or of things in general

The word willing means: disposed or inclined toward

Putting the two together we get someone who is “disposed or inclined toward having no knowledge or awareness of something.”

With the www at our fingertips ignorance today slides into willing ignorance because of:
  • fear
  • laziness
  • pride
  • ambition
  • evil intent
Some examples of willing ignorance:
  • Hollywood elite chumming up to the evil dictator in Venezuela. They could find out about his plan on taking kids from parents at 3 years old, his causing indigenous people to die because he kicked out the missionaries who provided medical help but they do not for some reason.
  • Teachers who teach our constitution forbids any mention of God by a public official. They could actually read the constitution and founding documents and study the writings of those who influenced them. In this instance they are either willingly ignorant or evil, I see no other choices.
  • The news media that refuses to look at contrary facts concerning their heroes. Hillary Clinton said she was named after Sir Edmond Hilary because her parents admired the man who conquered Mount Everest. An honest reporter would mention he climbed the mountain in 1953 and she was birthed in 1948.
  • Religious people who refuse to actually read the Bible but accept what a teacher tells them. The followers of the Watchtower, Arnold Murray, Harold Camping, Benny Hinn are guilty of being willingly ignorant. Looking at the false prophecies of each of these would clear up their fawning devotions.
  • The Blame America First crowd who believe the myth of George Bush trying to bring down our economy by destroying the twin towers. They refuse to look at any contrary facts.
  • The Rosie O’Donald type of traitors who are causing troops to die by encouraging our enemies. We are being generous by calling most of them willingly ignorant. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate.
  • Drug users who complain about the prohibition of drugs and lobby for the legalization of drugs are also a good example. If they would look at the real problems of drug usage they would have to admit they were wrong. They won’t though.
Admittedly these are from the left in the political spectrum and there are those on the right who are willingly ignorant but the left absolutely ignores their ignorance.

HTOITA - hopefully

I jut ran across your blog this morning while researching the term "willingly ignorant" in response to the ACLU's continued attempt to stamp out Christmas.

Good post.
