The plaza in the midst of town is very functional and there are lots of community activities. The local artist like to place sculptures there. The artwork is interesting. Because of one of the statues I placed the following letter in the paper (The folks at the Cloverdale Reveille are pretty cool people).
BEWARE OF UGLY GREEN STATUE - RATED PG
Dear Editor;
The town of Cloverdale has been my home for twenty years. I realize that I am in the minority, a Christian and a Bible believer. This said I have wondered why Cloverdale has such an inconsistent attitude toward offending people in a minority position.
The lovely plaza in the center of town is decorated often by interesting art pieces. You can rest assured that there will NEVER be anything placed there that would offend an atheist or sensitive non-Christian. That is not true, however, of art that offends people like me.
Placing a Buddha in a prominent place for several months puzzled me. A cross or anything Christian would never be included in the plaza. Now an ugly naked green statue of a woman mooning the road where it cannot be missed seems a bit over the top even for anti-Christian liberals.
I can only conclude that Bible believing conservative type Christians are not worthies of consideration. If the situation were reversed you can rest assure that the ACLU would file suit to cause Cloverdale to remove the offending sculpture.
Most of the time I do not mind being made fun of and ridiculed but in this case there has been a gross error in judgement.
After this letter I have had people speak to me about the statue. One lady said her 7-year-old asked her, “Mommy why is that lady going poo?” I have also been told I have no sense of humor and I am mean spirited and evil because of the cruel and harsh letter in the paper.
There are several things I have learned (relearned) from this experience:
- The liberals who run the display really do not care what a minority conservative Christians feel.
- The goal of the art is to push the envelope, ridicule the Christian, desensitize the children, and remove all barriers.
- If you object to anything a liberal does you are an evil person deserving obscurity.
I am glad God does not agree with them. His Book places us exactly where we ought to be. He is right when everyone disagrees with Him.
Now I am going to go work on that missing sense of humor.

I think that is the ugliest statue I have ever seen. Somebody has a seriously warped mind!
It's pretty awful! The 7-year-old was right - it looks like she is on the potty. Thanks for writing in and complaining about it. One major problem is that Christians do not speak up more often.
I think I'd enjoy blowing that thing sky high, I wonder which way the camera is monitering?

I agree that it's unappealing in a variety of ways, but there are a couple of things I appreciate about it. Art is so subjective and can be a visceral experience at times. It's interesting that there seem to be about as many favorable reviews as there are negative ones (from what I've read on different sites). Part of art's function is to help us define to ourselves what is or is not art and why. That being said, I also find it interesting that there haven't been any overtly Christian pieces displayed. Do you know if any Christian artists have submitted their art for display?
