A love story

A smile may be for several reasons. While there are many humorous interludes in Holy Writ there are also other emotions there recorded. Only a cold person could read the Book of Ruth and not see Boaz falling in love with Ruth. Love may not be funny but the very human side of this great man makes me like him more each time I read the Book.

  • Ruth was a young widow who was different than the normal Israeli lass
  • Boaz had more information about Ruth than is recorded in his conversation with his foreman
  • It was obvious Boaz was impressed with her character and dedication when he spoke to her in chapter 2.
  • Boaz asked her to come to lunch and even offered her a special treat in verse 14.
  • Ruth was probably an attractive lady and Boaz was constrained to tell his workers to be kind to her.
  • In verse 16 Boaz commands them to “let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose” so she could gather a good harvest.

I think there were probably some interesting conversations between his workers as their good boss gave this pretty lady some extra attention. Evidently Naomi could read the signs better than Ruth. Age does occasionally offer wisdom. The last words in chapter 3 expose her plan and her wisdom.

Boaz was a good employer and made a good husband for Ruth.

Ruth the descendent of an abomination and of a race that is disliked is placed in the lineage of Christ.

This is a good love story that has implications for the believer, as Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer.
